Come un uomo sulla terra (Like a Man on Earth, 2008) Film Screening Dagmawi Yimer is an Ethiopian Italian filmmaker and co-founder and vice president of the Archivio delle Memorie Migranti (Migrant Memory Archive). Dagmawi was born and grew up in Addis Ababa. He left his country after the 2005 post-election unrest in which hundreds of young people were killed and put in jail. After a long journey across the Libyan desert and the Mediterranean, he reached the island of Lampedusa on 30 July 2006. In Rome, after participating in a video workshop in 2007, he began working with film to collect audiovisual memories of migration. Like a Man on Earth, which Dagmawii co-directed with Andrea Segre in 2008, was the first Italian-made film to draw attention to the perilous journey, giving voice to memories that are almost impossible to recount. It remains an exemplar of how to document difficult testimony ethically. This free and open-to-the-public screening will be followed by Q&A with the director. Sponsored by the Italian Consul General in Houston and the Department of European and Eurasian Studies.
