Greening the Belt and Road: Promises and Realities in Central Asia

bis

Washington, Washington

As China expands its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and investments across Central Asia, questions about the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of large-scale infrastructure and connectivity projects have become increasingly important. Since the introduction of the Green BRI framework, Beijing has sought to position itself as a promoter of sustainable development, renewable energy, and environmentally responsible investment. Yet significant questions remain about the gap between these commitments and their implementation on the ground, as well as the implications for local communities and ecosystems. This seminar will examine the evolution of China's Green BRI in Central Asia, assessing both its ambitions and its practical outcomes. Bringing together academic experts and civil society perspectives, the discussion will explore the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of Chinese infrastructure investments, the role of green development in China's regional influence and soft power, and the extent to which BRI projects align with the sustainability priorities of Central Asian countries.
