Saint Paul – Falmouth, first British settlement on Antigua in 1632
Saint Paul holds a special place in Antigua's story: Falmouth, the parish capital, was the first part of the island to be settled by the British, in 1632. By 1640 Governor Warner lived near Falmouth Bay, and in 1689 the village was as large as the growing town of St. John's. Another milestone came after the abolition of slavery in 1834, when Liberta – first named "Liberty" – became the first settlement founded by freed people, many of whom bought small plots and built two-room houses. The parish boundaries were confirmed in 1873. Today English Harbour is the parish's economic and tourism hub. Do you know more stories from Saint Paul? Share them here in Local History!
