Saint George – Antigua's newest parish, created in 1725
Saint George is Antigua's newest parish: it split from Saint Peter in 1725. Yet its shores tell a much older story. Along Winthorpe's Bay, people of the Archaic Age left scatters of flint flakes and shell deposits, the remains of prehistoric meals. A survey in 1997 identified three Ceramic Age sites, including a large settlement with a flint workshop at Winthorpe's East, excavated in 1997 and 2002. Some archaic sites were later lost to land development, and research is still ongoing. Today Saint George is the smallest parish in the country, with Fitches Creek as its capital and Piggotts as its largest community. Do you know more stories from Saint George?
