Barbuda – First settled around 3000 BC by Archaic Age people

People first came to Barbuda around 2900–3000 BC. These Archaic Age settlers arrived by canoe and lived as hunter-gatherers; scholars still debate whether they came from South America, the Greater Antilles or the Yucatán. They left behind blades made from shells and tools and water containers crafted from conch and whelk. Archaeological sites have been found along the southwest coast from Coco Point to River, around the Lagoon and at Codrington, and human remains near Spanish Point have been dated to about 3,100 years ago. Today Barbuda is a flat island north of Antigua with its own autonomy, where Codrington is the only settlement. Do you know more stories from Barbuda? Share them here in Local History!
