Shkodër County – Land of the Illyrian Ardiaei and Labeates
During the Bronze Age, the area of today's Shkodër County was home to Illyrian tribes such as the Ardiaei and the Labeates. In the second century BC, Illyria was annexed by Rome, and the region became part of the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire. The city of Shkodër, one of the oldest in Albania, has been a regional centre throughout the centuries. Today the county lies in northwestern Albania on the border with Montenegro and includes the municipalities of Fushë-Arrëz, Malësi e Madhe, Pukë, Shkodër and Vau i Dejës – a land of lakes, rivers and high mountains.
