Durrës County – Ancient Dyrrachium on the Adriatic
Durrës is one of the oldest cities in Albania. Founded in antiquity as Epidamnos by Greek colonists and later known to the Romans as Dyrrachium, it became an important port on the Adriatic and a gateway between Italy and the Balkans. Its long history as a trading city has shaped the region for more than two and a half millennia. Today Durrës County is the smallest of Albania's twelve counties by area, but the second most populous, with around 292,000 people on just 766 square kilometres. It borders the Adriatic Sea to the west and the counties of Lezhë, Dibër and Tirana. Do you know more stories from Durrës County? Share them here in Local History!
