Sandy Ground, Anguilla – Anguilla's main port and old salt pond
Sandy Ground is both a village and one of Anguilla's fourteen districts – and, above all, the island's main port. Its long, curving beach is framed by high cliffs, while behind the village lies a salt pond that is no longer in use. That pond is a reminder of the times when salt gathered from shallow lagoons was an important part of island life and work.
With 230 residents counted in the 2011 census, Sandy Ground is small, yet boats, visitors and goods arriving here have always connected it with the wider Caribbean. Today its beach and harbour make it one of the island's best-known spots. Did your family work at the salt pond or on the boats? Share your memories and help us tell the story of Sandy Ground!
