Saint Joseph, Barbados – The rugged hills of the Scotland District
On the eastern side of Barbados, Saint Joseph is best known for its dramatic landscape, which gave parts of the parish the name Scotland District – a nod to its hilly, rugged appearance, so unlike the rest of the island. One of the island's highest points, Chimborazo, rises here. The parish has long drawn nature lovers: two of the country's best-known botanic gardens, Flower Forest and Andromeda Gardens, are found in Saint Joseph. On the Atlantic coast, the famous "Soup Bowl" hosts international surfing competitions. Today the parish combines quiet villages with a lively coastline. Much of its history lives on in the memories of local families. Do you have stories, old photographs or memories from Saint Joseph? Share them with the community!
