Saint Michael – One of the six original parishes of 1629, home of Bridgetown
Saint Michael was one of the six original parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton, in the early years of English settlement on Barbados. Its boundaries have shifted over the centuries, but the parish has always been at the heart of island life.
The main reason is Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, which lies within the parish in the island's southwest. It grew into the centre of trade and commerce and remains the hub of the public transport network. The Deep Water Harbour, the island's international seaport, is also located here.
Today Saint Michael is the busiest and most urban part of Barbados. Do you have memories, photos or stories from your neighbourhood? Add them here and help tell the parish's history.
