Christ Church – The flood of 1669 and the move of the parish church
Christ Church is one of the six original parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton and has kept its name ever since. A dramatic moment in its history came in 1669, when a flood destroyed the main parish church and its churchyard near Dover. The church was then moved to the Oistins area, which became the parish's main town and former capital.
Located at the southern end of Barbados, the parish today is home to the Sir Grantley Adams International Airport, the island's gateway to the world. It also protects the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary, the last remaining mangrove swamp in the country.
