Saint Philip – Parish church of 1640 and the island's farming heartland
At the easternmost end of Barbados lies Saint Philip, the largest of the island's eleven parishes. One of its oldest landmarks is Saint Philip's Parish Church, built in 1640 as the Anglican parish church – a reminder of how early the community took shape here.
The flat, low-lying land made Saint Philip ideal for agriculture. It still has the largest area of crop cultivation on the island, which is why Barbadians often call it "the country". Instead of a town centre, the parish is made up of many villages and districts, each with its own character.
Today Saint Philip combines rural life with a rugged Atlantic coastline. Do you have stories from your village or family? Add them here and help record the parish's history.
