Saint George – Gun Hill Signal Station, built in 1818

Saint George is one of only two landlocked parishes in Barbados and borders six of the other parishes. Its best-known historic landmark is the Gun Hill Signal Station, dating back to 1818. From its elevated position, it was part of a network used to pass messages across the island – a reminder of how communication worked before modern technology.

The parish has remained largely rural, with small villages and agricultural land spread across its roughly 45 square kilometres. According to the 2020 statistics, around 22,000 people live here.

Today Saint George is a peaceful inland parish with a strong sense of community. Do you know stories about Gun Hill, local families or village life? Share them here and help preserve the parish's history.
