Mangrove Cay – a sponging community on Andros

Mangrove Cay is one of the districts of Andros, the largest island of the Bahamas, and its defining trade has long been sponging, which remains a major part of the local economy. Its capital, Moxey Town – also known as Little Harbour – lies in the northeast corner of the island and is home to nearly half of the district's residents. The 2010 census counted just under 900 inhabitants, making Mangrove Cay a close-knit community with its own schools, from preschool to high school. Much of its history is passed down in families and among fishermen and spongers. Today the district remains a quiet, nature-rich part of Andros. Do you have memories or stories from Mangrove Cay?
