Ragged Island – Duncan Town and the aftermath of Hurricane Irma 2017
Ragged Island is a small island in the far south of the Bahamas and part of the Jumentos Cays and Ragged Island Chain, a crescent of cays over 180 kilometres long that includes Raccoon Cay, Hog Cay and Double-Breasted Cay. In the 18th century ownership of the island is said to have been granted to William George Lockhart. The island's recent history was deeply marked by 8 September 2017, when Hurricane Irma struck Duncan Town directly and caused heavy damage to the small community. Life on Ragged Island has always depended on the sea and on the resilience of its few residents. Do you have memories of Ragged Island or Duncan Town? Share them here and help keep its history alive!
