Harbour Island – Dunmore Town and the Earl of Dunmore

Harbour Island lies off the northeast coast of Eleuthera and, together with Jacobs Island, Man Island and Pierre Island, forms a reef-like barrier around a lagoon. Its only town, Dunmore Town, is named after John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, governor of the Bahamas from 1786 to 1798, who kept a summer residence on the island. Close to Eleuthera, where English Puritans settled in 1648, Harbour Island belongs to one of the oldest settled areas of the Bahamas, and its town has long been a centre of island life. Today about 1,800 people live here, and the island is known for its charm and beaches. Do you know stories from Harbour Island? Share them with the community!
