Spanish Wells – a seafaring town on St. George's Cay

Spanish Wells is a small district of the Bahamas whose town lies on St. George's Cay, a narrow island just about 500 metres off the northern tip of Eleuthera. The name recalls the time when passing ships are said to have taken on fresh water here. For generations, life in this close-knit community has been shaped by the sea, fishing and seafaring, and its location near Eleuthera links it with one of the earliest settled areas of the Bahamas. According to the 2022 census, the district has about 1,600 residents. Today Spanish Wells remains a lively island town with a strong maritime tradition.
