Lhuntse – a remote district in Bhutan's northeast
Lhuntse, formerly written Lhuntshi and officially Lhuentse, lies in the rugged northeast of Bhutan and has long been one of the country's most remote districts. Its steep terrain has shaped life here for generations: villages are scattered, roads are few, and farming, despite a favourable climate, has always been challenged by difficult access. Modern infrastructure arrived only slowly – the district's first petrol station opened as late as September 2005. Today Lhuntse is home to around 2,500 households and remains one of the least developed but most traditional regions of the country. Do you know stories, legends or family memories from Lhuntse?
