Haa – the Black and White Temples of the 7th century
Haa, whose name suggests “hidden” land, is a steep, narrow valley in western Bhutan, watched over by three mountains known as the “Three Brothers”. Local historians say that the Black Temple (Lhakhang Nagpo) and the White Temple (Lhakhang Karpo) at the sacred site of Miri Punsum were built in the 7th century, at the same time as Kyerchu Temple in Paro. Further up the valley stands Haa Gonpa, linked to the legend of a bodhisattva who appeared as a lame pigeon; ceremonies for Amitabha Buddha are still held there each year. The Haa Chhu, rising at Jomolhari, flows through the district. Today Haa is the second least populated district in Bhutan. Share your own stories and legends from Haa with the community!
