Chukha – home of Phuentsholing, Bhutan's commercial gateway

Chukha, officially spelled Chhukha, is defined by its role as a gateway: its main town, Phuentsholing, is the second largest city in Bhutan and the country's commercial capital. Here trade, travel and business have long come together, linking the mountain kingdom with the plains to the south. The district's administrative headquarters is the town of Mebisa, formerly known as Chukha. Over time the district has grown into one of the most important economic regions of the country. According to the 2017 census, nearly 69,000 people live here, making Chukha the second most populous district after Thimphu.
