Sarpang – Bhutan's southern lowlands from Gelephu to Manas
Sarpang, also known as Geylegphug, stretches along Bhutan's southern foothills towards Manas National Park in the east. Its key town is Gelephu, seat of the district's only sub-district. Life here has long been shaped by the warm lowland climate, agriculture and the connections between Bhutan and the plains to the south. The district's borders have also changed over time: on 26 April 2007, the Lhamoy Zingkha sub-district, with the town of Lhamozingkha and three gewogs, was transferred from Sarpang to Dagana District. Today Sarpang covers about 1,946 square kilometres and is divided into 12 gewogs. Do you have memories or stories from Sarpang or Gelephu? Share them here and help record the local history!
