Zhemgang – forest district between Bhutan's valleys and Assam
Zhemgang, formerly written Shemgang, lies in central southern Bhutan, bordered by Sarpang, Trongsa, Bumthang, Mongar and Pemagatshel and, to the south, by Assam in India. Its landscape of forests, rivers and scattered villages has shaped a rural way of life that has continued over generations. The administrative centre is the town of Zhemgang. Among the district's best-known places are the lake Buli Tsho and the hot springs of Duenmang Tshachu, both valued by locals and visitors. Much of Zhemgang's history lives on in local traditions and family memories. Today it is one of Bhutan's twenty dzongkhags. Do you know stories, legends or customs from Zhemgang?
