Paro – one of Bhutan's most historic valleys, gateway to Tibet
Paro is counted among the most historic valleys of Bhutan. Over the pass at the head of the valley came trade goods and at times invading Tibetans, giving Paro the closest cultural ties with Tibet of any Bhutanese district. Among its old sanctuaries is Kyerchu Temple, traditionally dated to the 7th century, and high above the valley clings the famous Taktsang monastery, the “Tiger's Nest”. Paro is at once a district, a valley, a river and a town of about 20,000 people, where Dzongkha, the national language, is predominantly spoken. Today Paro is also home to Bhutan's only international airport, the first stop for most visitors. Do you know stories or legends from Paro? Share them here with the community!
