Gasa District – Bhutan's high Himalayan north

Gasa is Bhutan's far northern district, stretching across the middle and high Himalaya. Life here has long been shaped by altitude and remoteness: in the north, semi-nomadic communities speak their own languages, Layakha and Lunanakha, alongside the national language Dzongkha, and herding traditions have endured for generations.

The administrative heart is Gasa Dzong near the village of Gasa, a fortress that has watched over the mountain routes of the region. The district's borders have changed over time, and it remains one of the most thinly settled corners of the kingdom. Today Gasa is known for its pristine mountain landscapes and its resilient highland culture. Do you know stories from Laya, Lunana or Gasa itself? Share them with the community!
