Central District – Homeland of the Bamangwato

Central District is Botswana's largest district both in area and population. It encompasses the traditional homeland of the Bamangwato people, whose chiefs have played a central role in the country's history.

Many of Botswana's leading political figures have come from here, including the first president Sir Seretse Khama, former president Festus Mogae and former president Lt. General Seretse Ian Khama. The district's administrative centre, Serowe, is closely linked with the Khama family. Today the Central District is a vast and varied region of villages, cattle posts and mining towns. Do you have family histories or village stories from the Central District? We warmly invite you to share them here!
