Kgatleng District – Homeland of the Bakgatla
Kgatleng is coterminous with the homeland of the Bakgatla people, whose community has shaped the district's culture and traditions. Its capital, Mochudi, is a historic village that gained worldwide fame through literature: it is the hometown of Precious Ramotswe, the heroine of Alexander McCall Smith's popular series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
Located in the south-east of Botswana, the district borders South Africa's North West and Limpopo provinces. Its population has grown considerably in recent decades, from 73,507 in 2001 to 121,882 in 2022. Today Kgatleng combines rural life with closeness to the capital region. Do you have stories from Mochudi or other Kgatleng villages? We'd love to read them!
