Southern District – Home of the Bangwaketse and Jwaneng's diamonds
The Southern District, with its capital Kanye, is home to the Bangwaketse and Barolong communities of Botswana. For generations, cattle and crops have shaped life here: the district has large private and government-run ranches, and maize and sorghum, Botswana's staple crops, are grown in the area.
A major turning point came with the discovery of the Jwaneng diamond mine, Botswana's third diamond mine, which has contributed greatly to the country's prosperity. Today the district combines farming traditions with modern mining. Do you have memories of cattle posts, village life or the mining years in the Southern District?
