Kgalagadi District – Life in the Kalahari Desert

Kgalagadi in south-western Botswana covers a large part of the Kalahari Desert and borders Namibia and South Africa. Life in this vast, dry landscape has always demanded adaptability, and the district remains one of the most sparsely populated in the country, with around 50,000 inhabitants in 2011 on some 105,200 km².

More than one third of the district is covered by the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which extends into South Africa and is a major tourist attraction. The administrative centre is Tsabong. Today Kgalagadi is known for its wide open spaces, wildlife and quiet desert villages. Do you know stories about life in the Kalahari? Share them with our community!
