Sowa – Township on the salt pan, established in 1991
Sowa takes its name from the San word for salt, and fittingly the town lies next to Sua Pan, also known as Sowa Pan, a vast salt pan where soda ash (sodium carbonate) is mined. The resources of the pan are the reason the town exists.
The Sowa Township was formally established in 1991 by an act of Parliament and has since been governed by its own township regulations. Although it lies within the Central District, it forms a separate administrative district. It is a small community: the 2011 census counted 3,598 inhabitants. Today Sowa combines industry with the striking landscape of the pans. Do you have stories from Sowa? Share them with our community!
