Corozal District – Maya heritage at Santa Rita and Cerros

Corozal, Belize's northernmost district, has a history reaching far back into the pre-Columbian era. The Maya left their mark here: the ruins of Santa Rita, near Corozal Town, and Cerros on the coast are reminders that this region was once part of a flourishing Maya world, connected to trade along the coast and rivers.

Centuries later, new communities settled in the area and shaped the district's mixed culture. Today Corozal, with its capital Corozal Town, is home to around 46,000 people and combines a relaxed life on the bay with a rich archaeological heritage. Do you know stories from Corozal's past or from your family's history here? We warmly invite you to share them!
