Toledo District – Belize's southern meeting place of cultures
Toledo, the southernmost and least populated district of Belize, is defined by the many peoples who have made it their home. Mopan and Kekchi Maya, Creole, Garifuna, East Indian, Mennonite and Mestizo communities live here, as well as descendants of settlers who came from the American South after the US Civil War.
Each group brought its own traditions, languages and ways of life, creating a remarkable cultural mosaic in a landscape of rainforests, extensive cave networks, coastal plains and offshore cays. The district capital is Punta Gorda. Today Toledo is valued for its natural beauty and living cultural diversity. Do you have family stories from Toledo? Share them with our community!
