Stann Creek District – Dangriga and the heritage of the Garifuna

Stann Creek in south-eastern Belize takes its name from the "stanns", safe havens used by early colonialists arriving from the Old World. Its capital, Dangriga, was formerly known as Stann Creek Town.

Dangriga is closely connected with the Garifuna people, whose arrival on this coast is celebrated every year on Garifuna Settlement Day. Their language, music and dance, recognised far beyond Belize, are an essential part of the district's identity. Alongside the Garifuna, other communities have also shaped the region over time. Today Stann Creek, with about 48,000 inhabitants in 2022, is known for its coast and its culture. Do you have stories from Dangriga or the villages of Stann Creek? Share them with us!
