Northwest Territories – Denendeh, land of the Dene

Much of the Northwest Territories is Denendeh, the traditional land of the Dene, whose history here reaches back to the era of Yamoria and Yamozha in their oral tradition. The territory also includes most of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and lands traditionally used by Cree and Métis peoples.

The territory once covered a far larger area: the Yukon was separated from it in 1898, and Nunavut in 1999, giving the Northwest Territories its present borders. Today it covers more than a million square kilometres and is home to around 46,000 people, with Yellowknife as its capital. Do you know stories of the land, your family or your community?
