Prince Edward Island – Birthplace of Confederation, Charlottetown 1864

In 1864 delegates from the British North American colonies met in Charlottetown to discuss union – the conference that led to Canadian Confederation. That is why Prince Edward Island proudly calls itself the "Birthplace of Confederation". The island itself joined Canada in 1873.

For the Mi'kmaq, the island is Epekwitk, "cradled on the waves", part of their homeland Mi'kma'ki. According to legend, the cultural hero Glooscap created it as his favourite island. Today the Abegweit and Lennox Island First Nations live here. Canada's smallest province, known as the "Garden of the Gulf", has the highest population density in the country.
