Pembroke Parish – Home of Hamilton, Bermuda's capital since 1815

Pembroke Parish is one of the nine original parishes created when Bermuda was settled by the English in the early seventeenth century and divided among the investors of the Somers Isles Company. It is named after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke (1580–1630). The parish rose to special importance in 1815, when Hamilton became the capital of Bermuda, taking over that role from St George’s.

Since then Pembroke has been the island’s administrative and commercial centre. Today it is one of the most densely populated parts of Bermuda, shaped by Hamilton’s role in international business, especially reinsurance and finance.
