Hamilton, Bermuda – Capital of Bermuda since 1815
Hamilton’s story as a town began in 1790, when Bermuda’s government set aside land for a future seat. It was incorporated in 1793 and named after Governor Henry Hamilton. In 1815 the colony’s capital moved here from St George’s, and Hamilton has been the political heart of Bermuda ever since, with the parliament building, Government House nearby and, in earlier times, military headquarters close at hand.
The town became a city in 1897, and in 1911 the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity was consecrated. Today Hamilton is a busy port, a financial centre and one of the smallest capitals in the world. What does Hamilton mean to you? Add your memories and local stories to its history!
