Southampton Parish – Named for the Earl of Southampton in Bermuda's early days

Southampton Parish is one of Bermuda’s nine original parishes, laid out in the colony’s first decades and named after Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton (1573–1624), one of the English nobles who backed the settlement of the islands. Occupying nearly all of the western part of the main island, it stretches from the shores of the Little Sound in the north to the island chain’s southernmost point.

Its coastline and its position near the Great Sound have always tied daily life here to the sea. Today Southampton is known for its beaches and landscapes and remains a much-loved part of the island for residents and visitors alike. Have you got a story, tradition or memory from Southampton? Add it to the parish’s history!
