Saint John Parish, Dominica – Portsmouth and the historic Cabrits

Saint John in Dominica's northwest is home to Portsmouth, the island's second largest town, which locals also call Grand Anse. Nearby lies the Cabrits peninsula with Fort Shirley, an eighteenth-century military garrison whose restored buildings are today part of the Cabrits National Park and one of the island's best-known historic sites. The sheltered Prince Rupert Bay made this coast an important anchorage for ships over the centuries. The parish's highest peak is Morne aux Diables at 861 metres, and villages such as Capuchin, Toucari and Clifton dot the coast. Today about 6,500 people live here, half of them in Portsmouth.
