Saint George Parish, Dominica – Roseau, the island's capital
Saint George is Dominica's most populous parish, home to around 20,000 people, and it includes Roseau, the island's capital. Roseau grew up at the mouth of the Roseau River, and during the colonial period it became the administrative centre of the island; its old streets still show wooden and stone buildings from earlier times. The capital was also the heart of public life when Dominica gained its independence in 1978. Bordered by Saint Paul, Saint David, Saint Patrick and Saint Luke, the parish combines town life with valleys, hot springs and rainforest in the hills behind. Today it is the island's centre of government, trade and culture. Do you have stories about Roseau or your neighbourhood? Share them here.
