Saint Mark Parish, Dominica – Soufrière and the tombolo of Scotts Head

Saint Mark, at the southwestern tip of Dominica, is the island's second smallest parish. Its main settlements are Soufrière, named after the sulphurous volcanic springs of the area, and Scotts Head, where a narrow strip of land links the mainland to a headland; it is described as the only tombolo in the West Indies. The headland once held a fort that guarded the southern approach to the island during colonial times, when the coast was of great strategic value. With the village of Galion, the parish had about 1,770 residents at the 2011 census. Today its marine reserve and hot springs attract many visitors. Do you have memories of Soufrière or Scotts Head?
