Gash-Barka region – Land between the Gash and Barka rivers
Gash-Barka takes its name from its two major rivers, the Gash and the Barka, whose seasonal waters have made this south-western lowland one of Eritrea's most important farming and herding areas. It is home to a rich mix of communities, including the Kunama and Nara peoples, each with their own languages, customs and histories. Agordat was once the regional capital before Barentu took over, while Teseney grew as a centre of trade. Bordering Sudan to the west, the region has long been a crossroads of people and goods. Today around 700,000 people live here, according to 2005 figures. Do you know an old story, song or tradition from your town? We would love for you to share it with the community.
