Central region – Heart of the historic province of Hamasien

The Central region grew out of Hamasien, one of the historic provinces of the Eritrean highlands. When the country's administrative map was redrawn on 15 April 1996, the core of old Hamasien became today's region, the smallest in Eritrea but also its most densely settled.

Its story is closely tied to the high central plateau, which lies at around 2,250 metres above sea level, and to Asmara, which grew into the capital and largest city of the country. Villages, farmland and the busy city life of Asmara still stand side by side here today. Do you know old stories, family memories or photos from Hamasien and Asmara?
