Anseba region – Highlands shaped by the Anseba River

The Anseba region in northern Eritrea takes its name from the Anseba River, which winds through large parts of the land. For generations, the river valley and the surrounding highlands, lying roughly between 1,800 and 2,100 metres, have shaped where people settled, farmed and traded.

The region's centre is Keren, its largest town and a long-standing meeting point for the surrounding communities. The climate is marked by contrasts, with hot days in May and cold nights in the winter months. Today Anseba is a region of market towns, villages and farmland along the river.
