Harari Region – The historic walled city of Harar

The Harari Region is defined by its capital, Harar, an old walled city that has long been a centre of trade, learning and Islamic culture in the Horn of Africa. Its narrow lanes, gates and traditional houses have made the old town famous far beyond Ethiopia, and it is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region is the homeland of the Harari people, and for centuries the city was the seat of an emirate before it became part of modern Ethiopia in the late 19th century. Formerly called Region 13, it is today the smallest regional state in the country, covering Harar and its immediate surroundings. Do you know stories, recipes or traditions from Harar?
