Eastern Division – Levuka, Fiji's first colonial capital
The Eastern Division is closely linked to Levuka on the island of Ovalau, its capital. Levuka was Fiji's first colonial capital and the place where the Deed of Cession was signed in 1874. Its historic port town, with its old buildings along the waterfront, is today recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The division is made up of island worlds with their own traditions: Kadavu, the Lau Islands, the Lomaiviti group and, administratively, Rotuma. Islands such as Gau, Koro, Lakeba, Moala and Fulaga have been home to seafaring communities for generations. Today it is Fiji's largest division by area, including its wide ocean spaces. Do you know stories, chants or family histories from these islands? Share them with the community.
