Northern Division – The island world of Vanua Levu
The Northern Division is centred on Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island, which it covers entirely. Its borders follow the traditional Fijian provinces of Macuata, Cakaudrove and Bua, so the division reflects old chiefly territories as well as modern administration.
For generations the people of these provinces have lived from the land and the sea, and each province has its own villages, customs and stories. The administrative centre is Labasa, where the main government departments are located and which has grown into the busiest town of the north. Today the division is known for its farmland, forests and coastal communities. Do you have family stories, songs or memories from Vanua Levu? Share them here so that others can learn about the north.
