Saint David Parish, Grenada – birthplace of the New Jewel Movement

Saint David’s was home to the New Jewel Movement, founded by local activists who wanted a grassroots movement to organise and educate Grenadians and published the weekly newspaper The New Jewel. The movement culminated in the Grenada Revolution of 13 March 1979.

The parish has older roots too: the town of Megrin, founded at St David’s Point in 1609, was destroyed during the Fédon conflict of 1795–96 and never rebuilt; its Catholic parish had been reopened by the French in 1721. Today St David’s is known for rugged headlands, quiet bays and secluded beaches. Share your memories and family stories from the parish with us!
