Saint Patrick Parish, Grenada – arrival of the Maidstone in 1867
In 1867 the sailing ship Maidstone brought 289 people from Calcutta to Irvin’s Bay to work on Grenada’s estates, which faced a labour shortage. Their arrival added an important Indian thread to the parish’s heritage.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Irvin’s Bay was a working harbour from which sugar and other produce from nearby estates were shipped to England and France. For much of the 20th century, large estates in the parish produced a significant share of Grenada’s cocoa and nutmeg. Today Saint Patrick’s remains a green, rural corner in the north of the island.
