Saint John Parish, Grenada – headquarters of the Fédon rebellion 1795

In 1795 the parish was the scene of the battle of Belvedere estate and served as the headquarters of the Fédon rebellion, one of the most significant uprisings in Grenada’s history.

Later events shaped the town of Gouyave, once known as Charlotte Town: an iron bridge was built in 1889 to link it with Florida, but after heavy rains in November 1897 the boulder bank and bridge were destroyed that December. Today Saint John is known for fishing, Grenada’s largest nutmeg factory and the Dougladston Estate, an old spice plantation. Have stories from Gouyave’s boats, festivals or spice estates?
