Carriacou and Petite Martinique – Judith Philip and the colonial era

During the turbulent 18th century, when the islands changed hands between France and Britain, most of the land on Carriacou and all of the property on Petite Martinique belonged to a remarkable figure: Judith Philip, a free black woman, and her family.

The islands were part of the French colony until 1762, then British Grenada from 1763, French again from 1779 to 1783, and British once more until 1974. Since then they have been a dependency of Grenada. Today Carriacou, the largest island of the Grenadines, with Hillsborough as its main settlement, and neighbouring Petite Martinique welcome visitors with quiet bays and strong island traditions.
